How to make HTTP to HTTPS Migration Process Properly?

After September 2018 Google forced to migrate the HTTP to HTTPS URL, because of the security and avoid the Spam. These are the reason all website installed the SSL certificates. After setup the HTTPS you must add the Google Search Console. Following step guide you to properly migrate the HTTP to HTTPS.

Add Search Console

After setup the SSL certificate you need to add the HTTPS URL in the Google Search console. You cannot replace the HTTP URL into HTTPS so you can leave the HTTP URL as it is.

 

Make force redirect

You need to Setup force redirect HTTP to HTTPS in your web hosting by using .htaccess files. This will helps if the request comes from HTTP its automatically redirect to HTTPS URL. This also helps to redirect your social media old HTTP URL into HTTPS. You can use the following .htaccess code to redirect the HTTPS redirection


RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

 

Add HTTPS Sitemap

You need to recrawl and collect the HTTPS Sitemap and submit to Google search console. If you are using WordPress with Yoast plugin sitemap then your Sitemap automatically changed to HTTPS URL.

 

Add HTTPS URL Google Analytics

You need to add HTTPS URL into the Google Analytic to find your HTTPS URL traffic. You can simply change the HTTP to https by using following steps:

  1.  Login to Google Analytics
  2. Go to Admin by click on the Gear icons in sidebar bottom
  3. Under property, click on the property settings
  4. You need to change the https in the default URL and save the settings.

Now your HTTPS request will be tracking Google Analytics.

 

Avoid Mixed content issues

After setup the SSL your domain will be changed to HTTPS request but images, CSS, Javascript, videos request still in HTTP. This will make the mixed content issues, this will not impact 100% but if you change this will helps to better performance. So you need to change all the request to https. If you are the WordPress user then you can install the SSL insecure content fixed plugin to solve this issues.
